Jessica Parke, Account Manager at Metrix Consulting (Perth), provided the answers in our latest Take 5 interview.

I was proud to help contribute to behaviour change as part of a major project we conducted into bushfire action and awareness in WA. It was really interesting and also really relevant to me. I grew up in a Northcliffe, where a massive bushfire came through really close to town. It was really confronting. We’d had the odd conversation about bushfires and a rough plan, but now I’m really banging the drum with my folks about their bushfire action plan.

The best bit about being a research expert is the variety of projects I get to work on. I like being kept on my toes and learning about different industries and organisations. I’ve also been fortunate to do quite a bit of travel with my work and have met some great people.

At work my colleagues would probably describe me as positive and someone who enjoys what they do. I think they’d say I work collaboratively; it’s always a two-way street. I may be a bit talkative and loud sometimes, but I think they’d also agree I’m a busy bee!

My favourite research project to date involved a month of travel all over WA, as well as the Northern Territory and Northern Queensland. It was part of a large national research project and included a road trip from Perth to Broome and out to Alice Springs to conduct local focus groups. We worked during the week and got to explore at the weekends. The work was really interesting, so it really was the best of both worlds.

Outside of work, you’ll often find me doing battle with the bugs that have been attacking my newly planted veggie patch. I’m told soapy garlic water, as a natural insect repellent, works on most garden pests!
