We sat down with Stephen Gilmour, Senior Business Director at Metrix Consulting, for the latest in our Take 5 series.

With over 35 years of experience in the Market Research industry, Stephen specialises in community and stakeholder research for federal, state, and local governments. His projects range from policy and program development to community perception studies. Stephen focuses on delivering actionable strategic insights that drive positive social change and enhance organisational reputation.

What do you love most about your job?
Working with like-minded individuals who share a passion for market research and delivering compelling insights. Our shared values and collective goals drive us to find the best solutions for complex research challenges.

Can you share a favourite research project?
Evaluating Australia’s Fire Danger Rating and Hazards Warning systems. This large-scale, multi-modal engagement led to the development of clear, nationally consistent systems to help communities protect themselves from bushfires and other hazards.

What’s the first step to tackling a research problem?
I take a deep breath, consider all options, and draw on my experience to find the best solution. If needed, I consult my colleagues for their perspectives and expertise.

What’s your favourite place in WA?
Chidlow, where I feel a strong sense of community and connection with nature. If I had to choose another place, it would be the remote and dry heat of the Pilbara.

What are you currently reading?
“The Voice is All” by Joyce Johnson, which explores the life of Jack Kerouac. The Beat Generation writers, especially Kerouac, have greatly influenced me with their unique vision and drive to push boundaries.
